Successful management
and secure protection of
other companies records
is one of Iron Mountain’s primary
tasks. If you visited
the company’s Daganzo de
Arriba centre near Madrid,
you would encounter
aisle upon aisle of
pallet racking, brimming
with archival boxes and
cabinets that stretch
out almost as far as the
eye can see. The
installation’s
tailor-made design
boasts six mezzanine
floors, crisscrossed by
two wide central aisles
that connect with
remaining access lanes
which are significantly
narrower, so as to
optimise every square
meter of available
space. The resulting
facility boasts a
storage capacity of
close to 500,000 boxes
that are completely
accessible and managed
by a specially-designed
software package.
The
structure is gradually
completed in blocks of
approximately 625m² as
if it were a Meccano set, since its inauguration.
This, however, is always
done respecting the six
floors and the general
design; from above each
aisle is in the shape of
a cross and measures
2,9m in width, from
which the remaining much
narrower aisles
measuring 0,80m radiate.
“The operators move
along the wider aisles
with pallet trucks
loaded with the boxes
organized on pallets:
these are later passed
over the lightweight in
trolleys to gain access
to the remaining
aisles”, says Nicolás
Sánchez. In this way,
“every square meter is
used”, he points out.
Another significant
point is that the frames
which support the floors
of the wide aisles
withstand a weight of
1,200kg/m² while those
of the narrow aisles
supports 250kg/m².
