IN A BOX AUTOMATED STORAGE

The retail and wholesale hardware dealers co-operative COINFER has enhanced the stock management of its members with the recent installation of a 4,048 box-capacity automated warehouse at its headquarters in Valencia, Spain. With the successful launch of this new automated system, the Co-op has given the go-ahead to gradually replacing its conventional storage scheme with a robot-controlled system, and has undertaken plans to expand the warehouse with the addition of a two-aisle 7,316 box-capacity shelving unit, handled by three stacker cranes.

As of the first Thursday in November (data is updated on a weekly basis), these shelving units stored 2,300 different products, 90% of which are small-sized tools (pliers, drill bits, bearings, crescent wrenches, double-ended wrenches, etc.). All told, this isle only stores a small part of the 23,300 products that the Co-op stocks at its headquarters, where it has a total surface area of 7,500m2 for logistics operations. Thus, the bulk of its products are stored in a six-meter-high conventional warehouse with pallet racking, where the first storage levels are for picking and the rest are for storage bays for replenishing items. All types of products are stored on these conventional racking units: small electrical appliances, household equipment, power tools, paints, plumbing fixtures, construction materials, plastics, protective work gear, etc.

Coinfer plans to gradually replace its conventional storage scheme with an automated one. In this connection, following the successful start-up of its first intelligent warehouse, the process of enlarging the project is already underway. Specifically, the Co-op will extend the two existing shelving units to a length of 50 meters and install an adjoining second automated warehouse with the same measurements (50x7x3.5m). The only difference between them is that the boxes of the first warehouse measure 400mm x 600mm x 170mm, while those of the second warehouse, which will store somewhat bulkier objects, will measure 400mm x 600mm x 220mm.
